The Lancashire Cycleway comprises two circular routes, a 260 mile figure of eight which meets in the picturesque village of Whalley in the Ribble Valley. The Cycleway can be completed as one tour or in two halves and takes in the beautiful coastal scenery at Arnside and Silverdale, the Bowland Fells, West Pennine Moors and the rolling pastures of the Fylde Peninsula. The cycleway will challenge with steep climbs and reward with quiet lanes and remote beauty.
Southern Loop
The southern loop takes you past majestic Pendle Hill, with it’s associations of witchcraft, and across the brooding moorland of the West and South Pennines. The cycleway is dotted with weaver’s villages, rides along quiet spectacular roads between Downham and Barnoldswick and over roller-coaster routes close to Trawden. The final part of the Southern route passes through scenic valleys before returning to the Ribble Valley. The route is an exhilarating cycleway which was hand picked for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Northern Loop
The northern loop offers remote cycling along the Bowland Fells, beautiful Fylde Plain and the lush valleys of the Lune and Ribble. The tour reaches it’s climax on the Cross o’ Greet pass, at 1400 feet this is the highest point on the Cycleway and rewards with stunning views of the Pennine Hills and Hodder Valley beyond. The Lune Valley is one of the country’s loveliest river valleys, with outstanding views to the surrounding hills. The cycleway passes through the quiet lanes of the Fylde Peninsula which offers a break from the steep inclines of the Forest Of Bowland. The picturesque village of Slaidburn, Silverdale with excellent coastal views, Arkholme with it’s quiet street to the River and Whalley with it’s historic Abbey and railway viaduct offer excellent respite along the route.
